AFC Liverpool v Burscough, 25th March 2023

The Reds needed 8 points from our remaining 6 matches to match our previous best ever points total in the North West Counties League Premier Division. Burscough were second bottom, and 10 points adrift from safety with 6 games to go. Clearly the visitors were in need of a special performance.

There was one particular special visitor through the turnstile, in Liverpool FC's Fabio Carvalho. He was invited to the boardroom at half time. He had his pictures taken with a few people. His reason for appearing at the Marine Travel Arena that day was his cousin played for Burscough. His cousin Nuno Rendeiro Silva Costa started on the bench, but did come on later on, giving Alan Harrison the opportunity to show off his Portuguese pronunciation skills.

We were very short staffed. Steve Fraser was on programme selling duty. In addition to running the turnstile, I was for the majority of the game effectively producing the tweets for our club twitter account. It was also non-league day, which no doubt helped to produce a crowd of 181.

Half chance to Burscough. Number 10 shot wide after Jack (McGovern) parried a cross. My tweet in the 13th minute.

Kyle Schorah shot narrowly wide after a promising move down the left. My tweet in the 21st minute.

Where's the referee's watch when you need it? Tom Douglas ran at the Burscough defence and his shot came back on the underside of the bar.  My tweet in the 27th minute.

Jack McGovern is quick off his line to thwart a Burscough attack. My tweet in the 31st minute.

A dangerous cross from the Burscough left is headed away at the 2nd attempt by Luke Stephens. My tweet iIn the 37th minute.

A Burscough penalty claim waived away after the ball struck Luke Stephens. My tweet in the 38th minute.

Burscough have the ball in the net following a free kick just outside the box. Number 5 Nathan Koehler gets it in. But thankfully flagged for offside. My tweet in the 41st minute.

Billy Whiz put through from a throw out from Jack McGovern. His shot goes over. Possibly best chance of the game. My tweet in the 42nd minute.

A Luke Stephens cross is cleared. AFC beginning to apply a bit of pressure. My tweet in the 43rd minute. A note in addition to the tweet is this was after a corner.

The Reds break again. Tom Douglas plays in Billy Whiz. Billy shoots wide. My tweet in the 44th minute.

Penalty for Burscough. Number 11 Edward Survuts steps up and scores. My tweet in the 47th minute.

Jesse Dowling has a shot which is dealt with by the Burscough keeper at his near post. My tweet in the 55th minute.

Adam Boydell number 4 in book for Burscough. My tweet in the 70th  minute. A note in addition to the tweet is that ex-red Adam Boydell who was captaining Burscough, got booked for a late challenge.

What a save! Ben Cartwright's point blank header is denied by the Burscough keeper. My tweet in the 71st  minute. A note in addition to the tweet is this was after a cross from the left.

After Greg Armstrong took back full control of the Twitter Account, we did restore parity. After spotting Charlie Monks the Burscough keeper off his line, Kyle Schorah lobbed him from 25 yards to the delight of the home crowd.

After that equaliser both sides showed an endeavour to get all three points, but both sides were short of a final ball on a few occasions.

The result was a little disappointing from our perspective. In our goal of matching our points tally from 9 years previous, it was a setback considering we had only one more home game remaining. The point left the visitors 9 points adrift of safety and still in need of a miracle, assuming two sides would be relegated. That said, it had been a very entertaining match.
