AFC Liverpool v Pilington, 21st November 2023

There was a minute's applause before the game to honour our former Joint Manager Ben Williams, who had died almost five years ago to the day. As I finished my duties in the turnstile, it must have been 15 mins into the game. There was no score at that point, although we had apparently gone close possibly on a couple of occasions. An entertaining first half was played out, and Pilks certainly played their part. Both Keepers were busy at times, although a flying save by our Danny Hamlett certainly caught the eye. After the break, the Reds got into the ascendancy, and Kyle Schorah found himself with a gilt edged chance to score. But he somehow shot wide. With bottom of the table Skem United that evening also playing Colne (who we were due to play on Saturday), Steve Fraser was certainly enjoying news of each Colne goal going in. This was because Skem had poached our Manager during the summer. Although it should be pointed out that by the time this game was being played in November, Ma...

Litherland REMYCA v AFC Liverpool, 26th November 2022

This was my first visit to the Litherland Sports Centre for a league game.  I had made I think two previous visits for Cup games. The Qatar World Cup was in swing. We were 4th. REMY were a place outside the bottom two. It was a first half where not a lot happened on the pitch.  We had one or two chances of note. Elliot Hughes fired over from one promising central position. Chances were very few at both ends. They had one corner which came back off our near post. Off the field, new chants were being developed courtesy of Mr Fraser. Due to the colour of his top, the Jack McGovern chant became "Jack McGovern's our Tango". Whilst debutant Joe Mswalie was gaining the tag of "Squeaky Mswalie". Into the second half and one AFC move saw their last man catch one of our lads. I must admit I was baying for blood. Then Steve Fraser pointed out that the last man was a certain Liam Loughlin who used to play for us. He was playing very deep today as opposed to midfield. Anyway...

AFC Liverpool v West Didsbury & Chorlton, 6th February 2024

A few weeks earlier, a pink goalkeeping jersey worn by Chadderton's Goalkeeper led to some good natured pink panther chanting. This night our opponents West Didsbury and Chorlton, who didn't need to change their away strip, turned up with pink stripes in their away strip! With a Goalkeeper who apparently hailed from Liverpool in a Tango top, we had a jolly good laugh. On the field despite starting brightly, a 24th minute Ezeikel Eme shot was spilled into the net by Reds' keeper David Parkinson to give West the lead. Steve Fraser was not impressed that West's young keeper appeared to have been laughing at our senior keeper's error.  We weren't behind for too long as Tom Croughan pulled the trigger in dramatic fashion just 4 minutes later in the inside right channel, and we were level. Soon we could have gone in front as a diving Tanaka "Alex" Cherera header went over. But it wasn't long before we did take the lead as Brad Shearwood running into the ...

Burscough v AFC Liverpool, 28th October 2023

A failure to beat Burscough would have meant ten games without a win. The latest instalment of that poor run was a 6-3 defeat at home to South Liverpool in the Liverpool Senior Cup the previous midweek.  After managing to get to the ground about 10 mins before kick off, I decided to order myself a burger. My first choice was a bacon and egg roll. But they had no more eggs! As I was waiting for my burger, Tommy Douglas was played in on the right to fire us 1-0 up. A couple of Burscough supporters lamented a familiar defensive frailty. A few minutes later I joined our ultra supporters behind the goal, to witness what I certainly felt at the time to be some ridiculous refereeing. Tom Croughan was played through, and seemed to take it past the Keeper only to be clattered by the keeper and a certain foul and possible red card for the keeper. Wrong! Despite Tom being in possession and the keeper failing to make contact with the player, the referee judged it to be a foul by Tom. Not sure ...

AFC Liverpool v Barnoldswick Town, 30th January 2024

After deciding against buying some grub at the food hut, and making do with a galaxy chocolate bar, I made my way up to the Crossendar Road End. Firstly I had a little chat with Mike Richmond on the half way line, before joining up with the ultras behind the goal. Due to working till 7pm, I was not on the turnstile that evening and Chris Dace was surprised to see me sneak in with 10 minutes on the clock. As I turned round, "Alex" Tanaka Cherera was on hand to thump home a flowing move to give us the lead. As the rest of the first half developed, both teams had good spells. It was anybody's game. But around the 25 minute mark, a goalmouth scramble ensued in the Barlick area after a corner. They cleared it off the line, and we also hit the post. On the 45th minute we got into a good position down the right, and played a dangerous ball across the area, and then the ball got turned into his own net by the Barnoldswick number 4. We were 2-0 up going into half time, and looking...

AFC Liverpool v Glossop North End, 13th April 2024

It was the final home game of the season. And following a summer of upheaval when previous Manager Matt Potter had decided to move on to what he may have seen as bigger things at Skem Utd, there were signs that we were at the beginning of a new cycle. Barring the previous Saturday's defeat at Bury we had been in good form. Four points from our final two games against Glossop at the MTA and at FC Isle of Man the following Saturday would see us achieve 60 points. In his first season, Phil Stafford had done a marvellous job. Had anyone back in August offered me 50 points, let alone 60, I would have gladly accepted. I think most of our fans would have done. Just after the half hour mark a flick on from a corner found Dr Adam Moorcroft who smashed it home to give us the lead. Just before the half hour mark, Glossop should have been level following a bizarre series of events. Goalkeeper David Parkinson firstly got penalised for picking the ball up, and it was interpreted as a back pass. ...

AFC Liverpool v Chadderton, 29th April 2009

AFC Liverpool went into their final home match of their inaugural season, needing a victory over Chadderton to have any hope of keeping their promotion challenge alive, going into the final match.  The Reds also needed rivals Padiham to slip up as well.  It was a fairly nervous start as the visitors created a few chances, including one that was presented to them following an uncharacteristic slip in concentration from Liam Coyne. Before the half hour mark, Chadderton's Keeper found himself in the referee's notebook following a lunge outside the area on one of our attackers.  He wasn't the last man, so a Red Card would have been harsh.  We took the lead from an Andy McCoy penalty just before half time.  That was how it stayed until about five minutes from time.  Chadderton's equaliser at the time seemed totally out of the blue.  However when I looked at the highlights on YouTube a few days later, I accepted that a draw was probably the least the visitor...
