AFC Liverpool v Litherland REMYCA, 19th October 2021

Speaking with Peter in the car before the game it was clear that this match was going to be crucial to our season. We were in 14th before the start of play on 18 points. Litherland were bottom with just a couple of victories. Those two victories had come following the recent managerial change that saw Colin McDonald replace ex-Reds boss Derek Goulding. However, Litherland had lost again at the weekend, a 5-0 loss at Wythenshawe Town. So would this prove to be a good time to play them? Either way it was a six pointer.

After leaving the turnstile I had a brief chat with ex-AFC supporter Bill who had gone back to watch South Liverpool. Callum Schorah was then denied by the keeper. From the resulting corner, Callum was again denied. This time by the inside of the post! Whilst we dominated the first half, Litherland took the lead against the run of play with a goal on 32 minutes. At half time, Ian and Suzanne (parents of the Schorahs) said the wind would be our inspired second half substitution!

After half time the initial pattern of the game changed little. REMYCA seemed well organised. But then, a shot from Paul Speed took a deflection and with the help of the wind left their keeper with no chance. A minute later, Jay Howell brilliantly turned past his man on the right. His cross was met by Callum Schorah for a tap in.

Almost immediately after we took the lead, we almost let REMYCA back in. New keeper Jack McGovern was on hand to thwart the danger. Before he joined from Bootle, we had conceded 12 goals in 2 games! This was only his second game and having also conceded just the one the previous Saturday at Winsford, things were starting to look a bit better in that area.

The game was made safe on 74 minutes as a deflected Rhys Hardacre shot lobbed over the keeper, after an Olly Sanderson effort had come back off the bar. The scoring was completed in the 82nd minute as substitute Craig Davies picked his spot in the corner from an inside left position. That was probably the best goal of the night, in Davies' 3rd substitute appearance.

With the victory Peter and I felt we should now be comfortably mid-table with 15 games gone, provided there was not a horrible run around the corner.
