AFC Liverpool v Prestwich Heys, 4th March 2023
Not for the first time we were facing Prestwich on the same weekend Liverpool were about to play Man U on the Sunday. We had been on a bad run, having lost 6 out of the previous 7 games in February. By contrast, Prestwich Heys had won 5 games out of 6. But maybe the new month of March would mark a change of fortunes for the Reds. Plus, the boys had delivered a very spirited performance the previous Saturday in very difficult circumstances at Kendal Town.
I was still performing turnstile duties when Tom Croughan put us in front on 7 minutes. As I walked round the corner Goalkeeper Jack McGovern was in a fair bit of pain as Skipper James Howell was being substituted. Apparently Jack made a crucial save with his private parts!A Luke Stephens header just after 20 minutes put us two goals to the good up. A few minutes later a cross from the left found Tom Douglas unmarked. He shot over. On 40 minutes it was Tommy Douglas who did put us 3-0 to the good. He placed his shot into the corner from just inside the box.Within a few minutes of the restart Callum Schorah made it 4-0. Soon enough he could have made it 5-0. He won the ball in the box and got a deflected shot away which came back off the outside of the post.Out of the blue Heys got a goal back. Steve Fraser remarked that Jack should have got his bollocks to it! The Prestwich fans started chanting they were going to win 5-4!The momentum did not though move decisively towards the visitors. A bullet close range header forced a fine save from the visiting keeper. That was before a fine flowing move finished with Tom Douglas on the right playing it in for Tom Croughan to get his second and the Reds 5th.It finished 5-1. We had a good record against Prestwich at this particular point in time. We wouldn't normally have won 5-1 though. The win left us 11 points off equalling our best ever points tally of 70 in the North West Counties Premier Division.
