AFC Liverpool v Golcar United, 28th September 2019

After watching Sadio Mane miss a couple of gilt edged chances for the big Reds during the first half of their match against Sheffield United in the bar, it was onto the turnstile. I met Golcar's Secretary who seemed a very pleasant chap. As for the big Reds, we did win 1-0. Making his debut for the little Reds that day was Daniel Cockerline, a 6ft 4 inches Centre Forward who had previously been on the books of Sheffield United.

As I walked round the ground, I stopped and chatted to our fellow volunteer George by the players tunnel, as I often did. George had just come back from a recent trip to Thailand. As I was chatting to him, the goalkeeper or one of our centre-halves played the ball to their number 9 (Michael Fish), who made no mistake in putting Golcar a goal to the good.On 21 minutes, we were back level. A corner was forced, which required me to go and retrieve the ball. By the time I was back in my place, Rhys Hardacre's header went past a few players, and past Golcar Keeper Harry Stead. We were level, and almost immediately could have gone in front if the right ball had been played at the right time. That move broke down, but other chances were created by the men in Red, including one chip by Cockerline, which just went over.It was far from one-way traffic though. A Golcar set piece saw a player slide in to shoot just wide.An excellent move saw the Reds go in front on 59 minutes. Cockerline held back a run, which would have seen him move into an offside position. Kyle Schorah was played into the inside left channel before pulling it back for his brother Callum to sweep it home.Whilst it was 2-1, we had some very good chances. Stead pulled off some really good saves, including one from Cockerline. But, if you don't take your chances, we know what can happen. From the stand, it seemed that the incident which led to a Golcar penalty was soft. Admittedly though, it is not always easy to tell when you are at the opposite end. The penalty was despatched, and suddenly it was the Yorkshire men more in the ascendancy. It had been a good game, that had been enriched by Golcar's supporters. As the match drew to a close, neither side went close to snatching it. But, I would say if anything the visitors looked more dangerous going forward, and 2-2 was how it ended.
