Charnock Richard v AFC Liverpool, 13th September 2022
It was a first half that saw the home team largely on the front foot. Thankfully Jack McGovern was in solid form. We were looking promising on the break. One early header from Elliott Hughes brought a fine save from the Charnock Goalkeeper. Some promising moves stopped due to a last ball.Elliott Hughes had taken a knock and was doubtful he would make it to half time. But it was he who was put through on 38 minutes to slot it home and put us 1-0 up. Three minutes later Tom Douglas made a promising run down the right, played in full back Fin Heath, who had to beat a man before beating the keeper brilliantly from a narrow angle to put the ball into the roof of the net. Sadly his Mum was not there to witness it.As the game moved into stoppage time, a good headed goal saw the home side get one back. Charnock then seemed to have the momentum going into the early stages of the second half. Just six minutes into the second half we survived a big scare as Fin Heath seemingly handled an effort to divert a shot over the bar, and went unpunished! Steve Fraser did though think Jack McGovern was pushed in the build up. The locals were certainly upset we still had eleven men still on the pitch. On 64 minutes Kyle Schorah broke into the area. He got pushed wide and pulled it back for his brother Callum to slot into the corner. At 3-1 the Reds were in a good position, and it could have got better a few minutes later as Kyle could have scored himself. At 4-1 it would surely have been game over. But then on 71 minutes, a looping header brought the home side back within a goal of parity. From a free header from a corner they did get back on level terms.
As the game moved towards its finale, Charnock put the Reds under immense pressure. I would argue our Goalkeeper Jack McGovern wasn't properly protected by the man in black. After one instance where he seemed to have been fouled by a Charnock attacker going up to gather the ball, he recovered to make a magnificent save. The referee got some big calls wrong especially on some of the challenges on him. But then again, as Matt Potter admitted afterwards, Fin was fortunate also to have stayed on.
All in all, we would have taken the draw had it been offered to us at the start of the evening. It put us on 22 points and kept us in second place after 10 matches.
