AFC Liverpool v Avro, 14th August 2021
Due to pitch issues at Marine, this was the start of possibly 3 home games at Skem's JMO Park in a week. Marine had been planning to lay a 3g pitch. Cost issues put pay to that apparently.
The unusual setting meant the turnstile was located close to the halfway line. That meant a first half setting up a temporary Rattlestation just outside the turnstile. On the pitch, Sonny Parr went into the book for a heavy challenge on the Avro number 9. I think it was probably because he had also had an earlier challenge on the same player. On the whole, the balance of play was fairly even. Then Jon Croasdale headed home from a corner. For the next 10 minutes, although we may have been a little lucky to be in front, we seemed to take control. There was no hint whatsoever of an Avro equaliser. But on 40 minutes that is exactly what happened,. It has to be said that the visitors did get a lucky deflection in the build up. Just before half time a set piece found Dan Cockerline's head unmarked. Sadly, he headed wide. The early stages of the second half saw the Reds on the back foot. A few of our lads had to put their bodies on the line to block a few Avro efforts. I wasn't too enthused about watching the 2nd half from behind the goal by the clubhouse, and watching behind fencing. Peter Garrity and Neil McMillan the Kitman had the same view, as we settled by the side near the goal. One AFC second half effort of note saw a goalbound Callum Schorah effort get blocked by an Avro defender in the right place from their perspective. For much of the second half Avro were not causing us too many problems. But as the match entered into the closing stages, the visitors were creating serious chances once more. One effort was blocked by the arsecheek of one of our lads, as Neil put it. Another effort saw Keeper Day Potter called upon to palm onto the post.If anyone was going to win it late on, it looked like it would be the visitors. But then Dan Cockerline was played in on the right. He had a chance there and then to play the ball across to the onrushing Kyle Schorah. Dan took that opportunity, he found Kyle, and Kyle slotted home to Avro's frustration. For the second consecutive week Kyle Schorah had scored the winner! We had 6 points from 2 league games. But it was important not to get too carried away. Whilst we were full value for our recent victories at Vauxhall Motors and Padiham in the FA Cup, this particular match could have so easily gone the other way!
