Cammell Laird v AFC Liverpool, 8th September 2015

Our trip over the water to face the Cammells got off to the worst possible start, going 2-0 down in the first 14 minutes! Within a minute of going two goals down, right back Michael Williams lost the ball, then won it back, before going on a run down the right. Williams played in Ronnie Morgan, who brought us back into the match with a nice strike.

With the score at 2-1 to the Cammells, Reds' Keeper Ryan Jones was called upon to make a couple of saves in quick succession. Immediately after the second save, Ryan badly musjudged a corner, and one of their guys headed over inside the six yard area. To be fair to their lad, the ball came quickly after the goalie's misjudgement.

We were often surrendering possession cheaply throughout the first half. We did though come close to drawing level, when a Ste Jones effort from over 25 yards just went wide.

Just before half time, we unexpectedly got a penalty awarded, when Jack Sinnott got clattered into. Steve Williams brought us level, with everyone hoping Ste Jones would not be taking it, due to his penalty miss at Handsworth Parramore in the FA Vase the previous Saturday.

So we went in all square at 2-2. The reality though was that we should really have been 5-2 down!

After the break, Ste Jones gave us the lead with an absolute beauty from outside the area, and with his weaker right foot! Ronnie Morgan soon got his second of the night, to make it 4-2. This was just moments after he missed a sitter! Thankfully, the ball fell to him for a simple tap in, at the second attempt.

With a two goal cushion established, it seemed that we would see the job through, and claim three valuable points. We did though experience a warning shot around the seventy eighth minute. when a chance fell to the Cammells. The chance came about when our left back Jonathan Swatton failed to deal with a routine ball. A cross then came over from their right, and one of their substitutes headed over in the inside-right channel. It would have been a well worked goal, which would have no doubt brought the momentum back their way.

We remained two goals in front until the 89th minute. Then our number 5 Danny Murphy conceded a soft penalty, which was duly dispatched. The momentum now was with the home side, who then equalised a minute later to take a share of the spoils.

After the equaliser went in, some of the home fans commented on how a draw was a fair result. Maybe it was. That said, looking back to that good chance they missed on the seventy eighth minute, I reckon that had their fightback started about ten minutes or so earlier, then we probably would have actually lost the match!
