Cefn Druids v AFC Liverpool, 30th July 2011
For a number of years, I had more than the odd occasion public transport adventure in following AFC Liverpool away from home. The trip to Rhosymedre in North Wales involved a crowded train to Chester, due to the races. Then it was a not so crowded train to Wrexham, followed by a bus to Rhosymedre. In fact due to meeting two Cefn fans (a father and son) I ended up taking a different bus to the one I had planned. The guy saw me in Wrexham Bus Station with my AFC shirt on, and realised I just had to be heading to the match. The match itself saw us go into a 2 goal lead courtesy of goals by Ste Jones and Ste Edwards. Edwards'goal was a tap in after the Cefn goalkeeper made a handling error following a Darren Torpey cross. There can be absolutely no doubt that Jonesy made his mark on Cefn. A year later he became a Cefn player, before returning for his third spell at AFC.Cefn pulled a goal back through an outstanding long range effort before the break, and could so easily have been level at half time. The second half saw Cefn complete a comeback to win 4-2 deservedly. Although, the decision to award a penalty for Cefn's equaliser appeared to be a bit of a strange one at the time. The second half saw a collection of unfamiliar faces for the Little Reds. The AFC substitutions saw a 10 minute appearance by Callum Tai-Hogan, who was often noted for judgements of ill discipline during his time as an AFC player. This appearance in an AFC shirt was ended by the referee, who ordered our management to substitute him! Callum stamped the bench when he came off, and I caught a glimpse of him arguing with the referee in the changing area after the match. The Cefn father and son waited for me after the match, and got the bus back to Wrexham with me. The bloke informed me that number 11 for Cefn was in fact Ian Rush's son. On the bus journey to the match, I was told by him that Rushie's son had in fact left for another team. It would appear he only realised Rushie junior had returned to Cefn at the match itself.
