AFC Liverpool v AFC Blackpool, 26th September 2018
I was just back from camping in North Wales for this midweek clash. With LFC playing Chelsea that night, we were low on volunteers. Unfortunately, heavy traffic was not helpful. I did finally arrive to take my place in the turnstile around half an hour before Kick Off, to the relief of Adrian and Josh.
We were generally in control, and got rewarded when Jay McGrane gave us the lead on 28 minutes. He was initially played through, but got stopped in his tracks by a save or a tackle, and it seemed the chance had gone. He then picked himself up and picked his spot to make it 1-0.
We remained generally in control, and would have gone in at half time 1-0 up if it were not for some poor defending. Chris Brady tried to run the ball out of play for a goal kick, but got caught. The ball was squared for a Blackpool equaliser, and it was all square at half time.
The second half was about ten minutes old when Drew Lewis shot at the near post with a narrow angle. The ball went in, and what a goal! His Mum (who was sat a few rows in front of Dave The Rattler and I) was straight on her phone.
Around the 70th minute mark, our continued dominance should have been rewarded with a two goal cushion. Unfortunately Drew Lewis missed an open goal this time from a rebound, after Callum Schorah hit the post. The miss was very reminiscent of a famous Ronnie Rosenthal miss quite a few years ago at Villa Park!
It was not long before Drew Lewis was replaced by Anthony Lyons, and Jay McGrane was replaced by Jordan Foster. The same duo (Lyons & Foster) had come on as late substitutes the previous Saturday to help clinch the three points at Shelley, with Anthony Lyons getting the decisive third.
This time the honour went to Jordan Foster, who finished off a move which saw Jay Howell played through. Howell played a good ball across the area, with the Blackpool Keeper stranded. Foster applied the decisive touch to make it 7 league wins on the bounce.
The win now meant we were just three points behind the leaders Carlisle City, ahead of the weekend's clash in Carlisle. We also had a game in hand.
