AFC Liverpool v Winsford United, 6th September 2017
This post looks back a couple of seasons to a
September midweek match at home to Winsford United, and one occasion in which
things did go right during Chris Stammers’ short reign.
We took the lead through Kevin Edgar on 7 minutes, whilst I was stuck in
the turnstyle. I got into the stand, and
settled down to see the Redmen score another two quick goals.
The first was a header by Allen "Weso" Weston inside the six yard
box, with the Keeper possibly stranded.
The second was an absolute beauty from Michael Boyle the Skipper. He came inside from the left, and shot into
the corner from the outside of the area.
We did not exactly settle on the lead.
But, two key chances came Winsford's way, which were not taken. The first was from a cross which found a man
unmarked. The shot went straight at
Dominic Garner. The second just before
the interval saw a shot on the turn go just wide, when the fella really should
have scored. That miss prompted Dave The Rattler to pipe up on his megaphone that the Number 10 (I think) needed to brush up!
We created chances ourselves in the second half, which were not taken. Substitute Steven Milne was especially
guilty. But Winsford also missed a few
efforts, and were frustrated by Dom Garner on at least two occasions.
I reckon (including the two first half misses) that Winsford missed about
five good chances with the score at 3-0.
Had they scored just one, then the whole complexion of the match
probably would have changed.
We effectively settled the match with about fifteen minutes to go, as
Michael Boyle got played in to make no mistake against the keeper. Boyle then went off to an ovation, and was
replaced by Stephen Wilson.
So all in all, we could have scored more.
However, if just one of those Winsford chances had been taken, then I
couldn't be completely sure that we would have taken all three points.
