AFC Liverpool v St Helens Town, 25th November 2014
It was a night in which we got out of the blocks quickly enough. This was also on a night which produced 10 goals! Our first was courtesy of Midfielder Carl Peers, who had made one of his trademark offensive runs. Peers had lost control of the ball, before getting lucky to retain possession. He was then able to shoot from a central position to give us the lead.
When Tom Stewart made it 2-0, there was still only 10 minutes or so on the clock. That second goal was a sublime volley, met by Stewart from Peers' corner, which flew into the corner of the net. Saints got it back to 2-1, before Ryan Cox made it 3-1 just before half time.
During the first half, I received a muffled message from fellow supporter Steve Fraser on my phone. Steve was in Cyprus watching Barcelona in the Champions League. I did get the gist of Steve's message that he wanted a text update or two. So I filled him in at half time, and then a few more times during the second half as the scoring continued.
Saints got it back to 3-2, before Franny Barry restored our 2 goal cushion. Ryan Cox twisted and turned in the inside left channel on 73 minutes, before curling a right footer into the corner to make it 5-2. A few minutes later, Steve Jones rolled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 6-2. This was after being set up by Ryan.
This match marked Steve Jones' 100th game for the club. Like with Franny Barry the previous Saturday, Jonesy was given the captaincy for the evening.
As Saints got it back to 6-3, I texted Steve to fill him in on Dave The Rattler's dry line for the evening. The dry line was along the lines of "Come on Dickie," and then "Come on Shirley," as Nathan Valentine came off the bench to replace Jack Sinnott. Steve had just mentioned in his last text that the weather was cold in Nicosia.
The scoring was completed seconds before the end, as Steve Jones hit a beauty into the keeper's top left hand corner from the inside left. As I texted Steve in Cyprus for the final time that night, I gave my view that the last goal was the second best goal of the night, after Ryan Cox's second. However, when I got home I changed my mind. The sublime volley by Tom Stewart was the best!
During the early stages of the 2020/21 season in the middle of the Covid Pandemic, I got chatting about this match with Mikey Smith. It only turned out to be his first ever match watching the Little Reds!
