AFC Liverpool v Ashton Athletic, 21st September 2016

This match marked my first home game as AFC Liverpool Programme Editor.  Before the match I was on the train to Formby to see my parents.  Funnily enough, I bumped into Adrian our new Club Secretary, who I had taken over as Programme Editor from.  Adrian said he was looking forward to seeing my first programme in print.

It was a first half in which the Reds struggled.  We were not very good at keeping possession, and Ashton were quite good at keeping it.  The visitors took the lead and led 1-0 at the break.

The second half brought a complete reversal, and we were suddenly getting our wide players into useful positions.  We were also winning corners and a few freekick situations, and putting Ashton Athletic under pressure.

We equalised through a Freddie Potter header, after an initial effort was cleared off the line.  We then got our noses in front courtesy of a memorable goal, in which Conor Belger chested down a cross on the edge of the area, and the ball fell to Mini Adegbenro who swept the ball home beautifully.  In fact, Conor Belger actually lost control of the ball, but got lucky!

Chances came and went at both ends.  Eventually the match was settled by a first goal for the club by ex-Tranmere Striker George Donnelly.  After Donnelly played in Conor Wright, Wright's shot was cleared off the line.  Thankfully, the rebound fell to Donnelly to slot home.

The following morning, our Vice-Chairman Alan rang me to thank me for my first programme as Editor.  He confessed that Ashton Athletic's Secretary complemented him on his entertainment from the mic which softened the blow of his team's second half collapse.  Alan was in fact told by the Secretary that he should be on stage!
