Nelson v AFC Liverpool, 31st October 2015
Before AFC took on Nelson, I was watching Liverpool play Chelsea in a Nelson pub. Just as Christian Benteke was about to pull the trigger to complete a remarkable 3-1 victory for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, Steve Fraser contacted me via twitter asking me which pub I was watching the match in.
After seven years of AFC Liverpool's existence, it was remarkable to think this was my first ever trip to Nelson.
A Liam Loughlin penalty midway through the first half was all that separated the teams at half time. The penalty came about after Ryan Cox was brought down.
In all honesty, we probably should have been further ahead. There were at least a couple of instances when Ryan Cox was played through, but the final ball wasn't quite kind for him.
By contrast, Nelson's best chance of the first half came about when a Liam Loughlin back pass let in one of their lads, who brought a save from Ryan Jones. That happened after Liam had put us in front from the penalty. Otherwise, Nelson barely threatened us in the first half.
Steve mentioned to me at half time that Nelson had lost their manager in midweek, and as often happens, five players had followed him. I later heard a couple of locals, who had initially sat in front of us rattlers, speak about the same matter.
Later in the second half, these two guys moved seats due to "the rattlers' presence!" I think the phrase used by one of them was, "Take your rattles back to Liverpool!" I replied, "No commento!" As they moved, I also hooted them off with my horn!
Phil Rimmer had also remarked to the Nelson duo about how they would not have to put up with the rattling for more than one game a season! Two Scottish sisters who had recently started watching us, were killing themselves laughing. One of those ladies was Margaret, who later had a spell volunteering in the shop on our home match days.
On the pitch, Nelson were doing much better in the second half, whilst we were not creating as many openings. In fact, we survived a couple of let offs.
For the first let off, Ryan Jones had to make a save following a move down their right. The second let off saw their striker miss a glorious chance, when played through.
We were treated to a Matty Williams defence splitting pass to his brother Michael running down the right, which was straight from the Jan Molby textbook!
When Nelson equalised from a penalty in the 88th minute, it did seem deserved. But, that was not the final word.
Jordan Thomas had come on as a substitute for the Reds, and had been giving their right back a horrid time. When a last gasp cross from the right was played in by Steve Williams, Thomas managed to get into the right place to take advantage. What a dramatic last gasp victory.
