AFC Liverpool v Runcorn Town, 5th October 2011
It was a midweek game, and upon arriving at Valerie Park I saw a Bluenose chatting with this Scottish guy in the street waiting for the gates to open. The Bluenose asked me who was playing. When I told him it was AFC and Runcorn Town, he did seem mildly interested that it was a bit of a derby.
The Scotsman was staying in Blackpool, and had watched a local non-league fixture the previous night as well. When the Bluenose tried to encourage him to pay a visit to Goodison on a future visit, the Jock responded by telling him he had little interest in the Premier League!
AFC were still awaiting a first win in the North West Counties Premier League. The early signs were encouraging with new centre-forward Carl Furlong looking useful. When Steve Groves failed to get the better of the Runcorn keeper in a one on one though, the omens were beginning to look not too good.
Despite falling behind, we did work our way into a position where we got awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Not only did we fail to take advantage, the foul had appeared to have been committed inside the area. Again, those omens were not looking good.
Before half time we were 2-0 down, following Steve Corris surrendering possession. The scorer of Town's second was that man, James MacShane. Despite our early flourish and the odd bit of luck not going our way yet again, I didn't think we could have too many complaints at being 2-0 down at the break.
The visitors always looked more dangerous and cohesive going forward. Indeed, Macshane could so easily have scored another by missing with a header whilst unmarked.
We did start the second period with a bit of promise. But when Runcorn got a third, that was the final word. Rather predictably the game just petered out from there.
