Congleton Town v AFC Liverpool, 6th October 2012
My trip to Congleton was almost as much about Liverpool FC's despised former owners Hicks and Gillett, as it was about the banter between the Congleton fans and the AFC Rattlers. I almost finished reading Brian Reade's "Epic Swindle" on the train there, including at Kidsgrove Station in the cold sunshine as I waited for the connection to Congleton.
The first half saw the league leaders Congleton create a couple of clear chances. However, the goal that saw them go into the lead at half time, was scored from a free kick which had been given away unnecessarily by River Humphries just outside the penalty area.
After the break, we were a lot better. Debutant striker Darrell Hale equalised after getting his strike away, I think after a few blocks during an AFC passage of attacking play. After getting back on terms, we did have to endure a sequence of play ourselves where we had to get bodies in the way, to block their goalbound efforts. Then Anthony "Brownie" Brown's header gave us the lead, after a corner was initially headed backwards across the box by a Congleton defender.
The Congleton fans in the stand were entertained by the rattling throughout, even after our goals. They liked Dave The Rattler's wit which was favourably comparing the Non-League Reds to Brazil. At one point in the first half, Shaun Harris went to collect a routine ball and slipped. When the ball then went out for an AFC throw Dave piped up "good dummy!"
The game turned late on when Congleton were given a late penalty, and River Humphries' dissent got him sent off for the second time in three weeks. Some of our people felt aggrieved with the penalty decision, especially as John Lawless was denied one in the first half, and it was the same linesman involved in both incidents. The penalty was converted, and with 10 men we were subsequently relieved to hear that final whistle to take the point.
