AFC Liverpool v West Didsbury & Chorlton, 6th February 2016
It was the day of the
77th minute walk out at Anfield, in protest at ticket prices, as Liverpool
conceded two late goals to draw 2-2 against Sunderland. Meanwhile at AFC, it was Ryan Cox's final
match before departing to the old enemy over the bridge.
We were 2-1 down at
half time, having been 2-0 down. The
first goal was a shot from the edge of our area, with our keeper Ryan Nield
poorly sighted. Their second saw their
left back slide in to score, after a ball across the area. We were very much second best, and West
should really have been further ahead.
Totally out of the
blue, we came back just before half time.
The goalscorer was Franny Barry, after their keeper appeared to misjudge
a cross.
Within a few minutes
of the second half, West missed a glorious chance to go 3-1 up. One of their strikers could not quite make
the right connection to a cross on the stretch.
With that miss, it looked like West's dominance may suddenly count for
very little, as Allen "Weso" Weston headed home on 52 minutes from a corner.
Briefly, the pendulum
had swung the other way to AFC, and twice we could have gone into the
lead. Firstly, another corner nearly
swung into the net, but was scooped out by the keeper. Then, Franny Barry missed a glorious one on
one, which went wide of the post.
When West broke away
to regain the lead on 67 minutes through Nic Evangelinos, any hopes we could
win the match were given a reality check, and soon disappeared. They soon could have gone 4-2 up, but hit the
post.
One feature of West's
dominance was the quality of their crossing.
They went on to score another three, with Evangelinos completing a
hat-trick. It ended 2-6, but could have
been more. Joey Gibbons subsequently
resigned as Manager that evening.
