Askern Villa v AFC Liverpool, FA Vase, 15th September 2012

Only three days previously the Hillsborough Independent Panel had published their report into the disaster.  On this day, AFC Liverpool were playing in South Yorkshire against Askern Villa.  Due to "The Truth" now being made official, AFC Liverpool supporters started two minutes applause for the 96 Hillsborough victims at 3.06PM.  It was a poignant time, and an honour to be part of it.

Steve Fraser along with Mooresy (the then Gaffer) had watched Askern play in the midweek against Hemsworth Miners Welfare, who were ironically AFC's first ever FA Cup opponents.  Steve felt that Askern's number 10 (who had been wearing the number 7 shirt in midweek) was their main dangerman.  He was full of pace, and he did in fact strike the first blow following an Anthony Brown error.

With John Lawless wearing number 10 for AFC, the game could have developed into a tale of the two number 10s.  Although Lawless did have one of his quieter games, he did make two telling contributions in our fightback to win 3-1.  Firstly, it was his cross that enabled Ryan Wilkinson to head home an equaliser.  Secondly, he did finally settle the tie from the penalty spot with about seven minutes to go.

Despite a first half dominance in which the Reds hit the Askern woodwork on three occasions, we were only on terms at the break.  I can also recall the Askern Keeper (who Steve advised was a change from their midweek line up) not being particularly confident and getting lucky a few times during the first half.  Although he got better after the break, he dropped a cross to allow Anthony Brown to put us in the lead and atone for his earlier error.

All in all, we were a lot more comfortable than the scoreline would suggest.  In fact apart from their first half goal, I believe Askern only created one other chance of note.  It was a day that also gave me the memory of bumping into Mooresy and the squad in a service station just outside Huddersfield on route to the match.  Mooresy did ask if I wanted to leave the car, and join the lads on the coach.  I felt I would be best not accepting due to the Service Station two hour parking rule.  Had I gambled, it could have been very interesting indeed.
