AFC Liverpool v Alsager Town, 8th August 2015

For this AFC Liverpool from Yesteryear post, I look back to the opening day of the North West Counties League two seasons ago.

It was the opening day of the season, and I was predicting a 2-1 home win against Alsager on the Club's new predictor game, which included other games from around the league.

A goal from Franny Barry sent us on our way to an excellent season start.  Franny chipped their keeper after being played through.

As the first half continued, so did our dominance.  As we looked more and more comfortable, fellow supporter Steve Fraser and I debated over how many we would win by.

Despite our dominance, a second goal proved elusive before the interval.  Franny could have got a second, but headed over at the near post.  To be fair, the ball did probably come to him quite fast.

That miss could have proven to have been a turning point, had Ryan Jones not saved at his near post just before half time.  The Bullets continued to improve in the second half, and we escaped at least a couple more let offs.

By the midway point of the second half, it looked just a matter of time before the visitors would be back on terms.  Then Ryan Cox stopped the comeback in their tracks.

Ryan scored his first and our second on 66 minutes.  He went on to score a hat-trick, with his third goal very much outrageous, by spooning it over the keeper.  Alan the Rattler remarked that the true hat-trick definition is three goals in succession.

Everton were also playing their opening home Premier League fixture on this day, and drew 2-2 with Watford.  As I passed through Liverpool Central Station on my way home, an overseas Everton fan got on the train.

Unfortunately for one local elderly gentleman, this foreign guy's English was not the best.  When the elderly guy referred to the newly promoted Watford as "a bum team," the foreign guy simply didn't get him!
