Alsager Town v AFC Liverpool, 24th March 2012

This was the first time I think anyone connected with AFC would have made the trip to Alsager.  Prior to our unexpected promotion the previous summer, I can only recall us playing Alsager once in a Valerie Park cup tie during our Division One days.  If my recollection there is wrong, then I can confirm this particular trip sure was the first time I ever set foot in Alsager.

It was a good job I got into Alsager with plenty of time to go before the kick off, as I had yet another episode of shall we say misreading directions from google maps.  Despite yet more friction between myself and google maps, I was able catch a bit of Spurs v Chelsea in a pub, and still get to the ground with 25 minutes to spare.

Our club announcer Alan Harrison spent much of the first half sitting with us rattlers, and engaged in conversation with us about past family connections with the Liverpool FC hierarchy.  We also chatted to a Liverpool fan who lived in Stoke.  This chap said he pops to see Alsager every now and then, and sure was entertained by the rattles.

Despite AFC being dominant in a first half which saw a Darren Torpey effort come back off the bar, Franny Barry's effort on the stroke of half time only drew us level.  This was after the hosts went in front from what was probably their only chance of the half.  John Lawless had been taking his time to get into the game.  But it was his dummy which had been instrumental in setting up Barry's equaliser.

We were also the better team in the second half as Lawless almost scored from 30 yards.  Alsager only had one chance of note in the second period, as Leon Bimpson had to save a dipping shot in the final minutes.  This left us all feeling that this would be a good point.  But then we went up the other end of the pitch, where Lawless showed some fine skill to play in Franny down the right.  He crossed for Steve Jones to bang into the back of the net.  What a dramatic finale!
